Why is Jesus Weeping?

“But as he came closer to Jerusalem…he began to weep.
“How I wish today that you of all people
would understand the way to peace.
But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes.
Before long your enemies…will crush you into the ground,
and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave
a single stone in place, because you did not recognize it
when God visited you.” Luke 19:41-44

Jesus was approaching God’s beloved city, and weeping. Why was he weeping? Because although they proclaimed God as God, they didn’t know him. He didn’t live in their hearts and relationships. Instead, they abused themselves and each other. And because they destroyed themselves from within, enemies would come and finish them off in their outer world, too.

So many people miss it! If we say God is God, yet he doesn’t direct our hearts, we’re living in our own power, not his. When we’re in relationship with God, we’re at peace with him, others, and ourselves. Why do people pursue spirits and things that don’t bring life? Some go so far down this dark path that they lose their families, businesses, and even their lives.

Jesus is weeping today over many people. Where is he in your life? Does he live within, giving you peace, power, and love? Or is he somewhere outside your heart, family, or church… weeping?
