“A gentle answer deflects anger,
but harsh words make tempers flare.
The tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing,
but the mouth of a fool belches out foolishness.”
Proverbs 15:1, 2
The heart doesn’t easily separate the message from the tone it’s spoken in. When truth is given without love, people often run from the truth. The intent of the one who did the speaking matters little at that point. The inflammation caused by the harsh words becomes the message.
Truth and wisdom don’t need to be spoken harshly. They stand in their own power. Who decides what tone of voice to use when speaking advice or admonition into someone’s life?
