Mary’s Song of Praise

His mighty arm has done tremendous things! He has scattered the proud and haughty ones. He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.

We think things will stay the way they are.

Princes will stay princes.

The people on the bottom will stay on the bottom.

The rich will stay rich; the poor will stay poor.

But no, these all of life is constantly in motion.

Some people work, work, work their way to the top. In so doing, they trample others to get there. In order to stay there, they keep trampling and working harder and harder. Exhausted and burned out, their life eventually falls apart.

Some people campaign their way to the top. When they get there, they lack competence and cannot do their job. They use their position’s power to insulate their position. People around them secretly resent them. Their lives are very lonely.

Some people love and serve their way to the top. They help others succeed. People are glad to see them succeed, because they will use their success to love and serve others even more.

God calls the humble up; he pushes the proud down. They’re both surprised.

Let the humble who struggle with feeling they’re on the bottom sing with Mary.
