His Peace

I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart.
And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give.
So don’t be troubled or afraid.
John 14:27

Every thought in our heads is like a sound byte we’re listening to. The thoughts we choose create the soundtracks that fill our minds. Some soundtracks keep us awake at night. We wake up in the morning to our inner soundtracks, and they’re with us throughout the day.

We’re responsible for the sound bytes we choose to listen to, whether unhealthy brain chatter or a peaceful symphony.

Unhealthy brain chatter comes in many forms, like unforgiveness, grudges, unfulfilled promises, manipulating others, bad debt, and worry. God wants to replace unhealthy brain chatter with healthy sounds of peace.

Philippians 4:8 says “…whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Just as we should choose healthy foods for our bodies, we should choose healthy thoughts for our minds. Consider some of these thoughts:

  • Little daily miracles in our lives.
  • The beauty of nature.
  • Reading and thinking about the Bible.
  • Gratitude for even little things.
  • The good we see in each other.
  • Ways to be generous and show love.
  • Our hopes, dreams, and goals.

I struggled with depression for most of my life. Part of my problem was that I was emotionally drained from all the unhealthy chatter in my mind. Realizing I could control my thoughts, with God’s help, was a big step in overcoming depression.

Jesus gave us the gift of peace. His peace comes when we replace the unhealthy chatter in our heads with healthy thoughts.
