Divine Chain of Command

“And the king granted these requests,
because the gracious hand of God was on me.
Nehemiah 2:8

Most people want to be favored by the people in charge, like their boss, the local police, Dad and Mom, or whoever holds the power to make decisions that impact them. To seek the king’s favor without first securing God’s favor bypasses God’s chain of command.

We might try so hard to win the favor of those in authority that we are willing to compromise. We give up our integrity and sell parts of our souls to corruption or deception to give a convincing story through our clever smoke and mirrors.

God’s favor comes through pursing him above all else and letting life’s experiences develop excellent character in us. A man diligent in his business will stand before kings. (Proverbs 22:29) A man who manipulates his way into the king’s presence might also stand, but not for long.

Nehemiah understood that the earthly king’s favor came as a result of first securing God’s favor.

Don’t take shortcuts to securing favor. Keep these priorities in their correct order, and experience lasting success. Earthly kings come and go, but God is forever.
