“Well, then,” Jesus said, “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar,
and give to God what belongs to God.”
Trying to trick Jesus doesn’t work, even if you’re extreme Bible scholars like the Pharisees. Not only did Jesus outsmart them, he taught them a lesson, a lesson still good for us today.
Nothing material belongs to me – I may or may not be able to keep it in this life, but I certainly can’t take it with me into eternity. I need to meet my financial obligations, even ones I didn’t directly choose, such as paying taxes.
None of that really matters at the end of life. Who I am in life matters. Who I am inside is all that’s really mine: love, compassion, empathy, integrity. That’s what makes me, ME.
That’s what belongs to God. ME. I want to give ME to God. Caesar can have the rest.
