“Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.
‘I have come to set a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
Your enemies will be right in your own household!’
I don’t think Jesus is telling us it’s time to start brawling with our families. What he’s telling us is that to follow him is a call to challenge the norms and complacency that daily living tends to cultivate. To be the salt of the earth is to ask the hard questions and step into relational roles that aren’t always traditional. There may come a situation where you must stand against a family member over issues that run deeper than blood. When the kingdom of God is on the line, all bets are off. The enemy uses deceptive tactics to infiltrate the cracks of our strongholds. I think this is what Jesus was trying to warn us about here.
