On March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747 passenger jets collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport), on the Spanish island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, killing 583 people, and making it the deadliest accident in aviation history.
Norman Williams was one of sixty survivors. I listened to his story. One thing that stood out to me was that many of the people who died could have survived. They only would have needed to get up and make their way out of the plane. Instead Norm watched as they just sat in their seats while the plane burned.
