Sooner Than We Think

This is, all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out.
Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.

Romans 13:11

On March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747 passenger jets collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport), on the Spanish island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, killing 583 people, and making it the deadliest accident in aviation history.

Norman Williams was one of sixty survivors. I listened to his story. One thing that stood out to me was that many of the people who died could have survived. They only would have needed to get up and make their way out of the plane. Instead Norm watched as they just sat in their seats while the plane burned.

We’re traveling inside this short dash, called time, that’s rushing toward eternity. Some people are pushing through heat and debris for a better, eternal life. But most are just sitting there. Whatever could they be thinking?
