Here’s how we can be sure that we’ve truly come to know God: if we keep his commands. If someone claims, “I have come to know God by experience,” yet doesn’t keep God’s commands, he is a phony and the truth finds no place in him.
We can be sure that we’ve truly come to live in intimacy with God, not just by saying, “I am intimate with God,” but by walking in the footsteps of Jesus.
1 John 2:3-6
John doesn’t hold anything back here. This is how I know whether Jesus is my shepherd. Also, if I see obvious continued godlessness in you or someone else.
The Bible says you and I are phonies.
Following Jesus isn’t the same as…
- Pointing back to a date when you got saved.
- Going to church.
- Cleaning out some bad habits
Maybe we make a mistake when we say, “I need to start going to church,” or “I need to start reading the Bible.”
We really need to tell ourselves, “I need to follow Jesus.” Reading the Bible and attending a good church are not substitutes for following Jesus. When we decide to follow Jesus, they definitely help.
