Then Moses called for Joshua, and as all Israel watched, he said to him, “Be strong and courageous! For you will lead these people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors he would give them. You are the one who will divide it among them as their grants of land. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.” Deuteronomy 31:7-8
How comforting to know when wake I up in the morning feeling empty and inadequate, God will go ahead of me. He will go ahead of me, provide me with strength, and be my Guide.
How I need to hear these words when I feel drained and a little lost, facing the future with so many battles ahead:
- Guiding our culture.
- Building a powerful sales engine.
- Conquering the broken places inside that keep me from enjoying little children and them from enjoying me.
- Being an unconditionally loving father to a family who doesn’t always understand or appreciate me.
- Helping other struggling leaders find their way with Jesus.
As a frightened child clings hard to a parent, I’m clinging hard to this promise, that God is with me and goes before me. That means when I get there, he will be waiting for me. That means he’s not sending me out into a dark, angry place alone. He promises to go ahead of me and show me the way through. I need to hold tight to him, never lose sight of him.
As one who leads others, how many need to hear from me these words Moses spoke to Joshua?
I know how it feels…
Today, my fellow leaders, hear what God says I’m to tell you: Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
Proverbs 11:25 says: “Those who water others will themselves be watered.”
Receive the water of hope and encouragement from God’s well. Now go, water others who are tired and afraid.
