Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.
2 Timothy 1:13, 14
Although I can’t see anyone else’s insides, I know the Holy Spirit speaks to me. When I wish Jesus would be right here, telling me what’s going on and what to do, Jesus reminds me in John 16:8 he will leave the Holy Spirit with us, “who will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.”
Jesus is here. I simply need to trust the Holy Spirit in me.
Do voices other than my own live in me? Yes. Scary thought. Or maybe that’s comforting. Depends which voice or voices I listen to.
Some people compartmentalize the Holy Spirit into something like an imaginary Disney character or a creepy Jack Nicholson-ish husky whisper in a thriller-killer movie.
The Holy Spirit doesn’t live in a compartment. He’s God’s voice everywhere.
Trust the whisper.
Don’t chase personal ambitions that drown out the Holy Spirit’s guiding voice.
For many years I was chasing God through my church experiences. God was silent there for me and I clumsily wounded and got wounded almost daily. It wasn’t until I was fed up with my murky trail of failures and rejections that I finally said, “So where are you God?”
He wasn’t in church, at least not the church reality I and others were trying to build. He was in my everyday life. When I started listening to the everyday Jesus, my life got better.
Does the Holy Spirit speak in you?
