Jesus Felt My Dispair

Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said,
“If you are the Son of God, jump off!
For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect and guard you.
And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’”
Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’”
Luke 4:9-12

There were times in my life when I stood on the edge of despair, felt worthless, and wanted to die. Sometimes I wanted to take my own life. My father had taken his life. I’ve personally known two businessmen who took their lives. What held me back was the awareness that my life is God’s, not mine.

In my darkest days, the Spirit whispers, “A living dog is better than a dead lion.” (Ecclesiastes 9:4). I don’t plunge into the depths of despair like I used to. But I still have my dark moments. When I surrender to God’s sovereignty, peace comes.

You will keep in perfect peace
all who trust in you,
all whose thoughts are fixed on you!
Isaiah 26:3

It’s deeply comforting to know Jesus faced the same temptation.
