And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; they will become traps for you, and their gods will become snares to you.’

A little background here. The Israelites didn’t quite get the job done driving everyone out as God had commanded. They almost finished, but not quite.
God let them know they missed their window. Now, instead of God helping them drive their enemies out, God is letting them become thorns in their sides.
This applies to us today. When we don’t deal with a character flaw, it will fester underground, spring up like a weed at the wrong time, and become our downfall.
