Then his disciples began arguing about which of them was the greatest. But Jesus knew their thoughts, so he brought a little child to his side…. Whoever is the least among you is the greatest.
Most arguments I’ve witnessed or been involved in leave the original issue behind and become a power struggle to see who wins.
Translation: “Who’s the greatest?”
Then the “greatest” person gets their way. Sometimes the winner doesn’t bring the best ideas, and we don’t get the best results. When I invest my time and effort into making myself appear better than another person, I’m only impressing myself. When I entangle myself in a power struggle, I’m arguing my way up a mountain I should never be climbing. When I get to the lonesome top, it’s only a matter of time till I slip and fall.
Jesus says the person who serves is the greatest. It’s better to humble myself and just serve. Shift from being self-focused to helping others win. Imagine a world where all of us race to the bottom to serve one another.
Who will go first?
